Summer Fun in Hampton Roads

The heat is rising and the sun is shining! Which means it’s time for summer fun in Hampton Roads. Arguably one of the most popular seasons in the area, summer is the perfect time to get outside, into the water, on the trail or wherever else suits you! It’s a time to make priceless memories with family and friends that will be cherished for a lifetime.

To help kick off your summer fun, we’ve put together a few of our local favorites that are perfect for summer!

Visit the Hermitage Museum and Gardens

One of our favorites, a Hampton Roads must-see! This historic home and beautiful gardens boast a nationally recognized art collection spanning 5,000 years, contemporary exhibition galleries, a Visual Arts Studio, and 12 acres of gardens and grounds that offer art and culture to the community.

Outdoor movies

A great way to kick back and relax in the outdoors, all while keeping the whole family busy and entertained. A rare combo! We are so grateful for the many shopping centers, rec centers and other community centers that host outdoor movies all summer long. Find one that’s closest to you in the list below:

Tour the Norfolk Botanical Garden

Have you visited the Botanical Gardens? Whether it’s your first visit or 100th, these picturesque gardens are ever changing and are a joy to take in. The Norfolk Botanical Garden is a non-profit museum for plants whose mission is to enrich life by promoting the enjoyment of plants and the environment through beautiful gardens and educational programs.

Visit the Cape Henry Lighthouse

A Hampton Roads classic that should be checked on everyone’s “I’ve seen it” list. This lighthouse carries a rich history, as it is the first federally funded public works project of the newly formed United States government. It was authorized by George Washington and overseen by Alexander Hamilton. The Lighthouse is situated near the “First Landing” site where English settlers first set foot on their way to settle in Jamestown. Plan your visit today!

Summer concert series

Boy, do we have a passion for live music in Hampton Roads?! We are not complaining. If you love live music, and hearing it outdoors you live in a great area! Check out the list below to view upcoming summer concert schedules  at one of the venues closest to you!

Chesapeake Planetarium

Visiting the planetarium is truly, out of this world! Plus, visit on Thursday nights at 8:00 p.m. for free education programs, topics changing monthly. Please note, it’s recommended that children below the first grade level not be admitted to the planetarium chamber.

We hope you enjoy the summer!
