A Guide to Springtime Events in Hampton Roads

Spring has sprung and Hampton Roads is brimming with family-friendly activities!

  • Virginia Beach

    • March 13 at 2pm at The Barry Robinson Theater and Fine Art Center on Princess Anne Road:  Superheroes!  An interactive play from The Children’s Theatre of Hampton Roads’ improvisational troupe, Bucket of Monkeys!  The play lasts about 45 minutes and admission is $5.  Kids under 3 receive free admission.

    • March 13 from 1pm -5 pm at the Virginia Beach Convention Center: VBVRS Oyster Roast and Craft Beer Festival! Enjoy Lynnhaven oysters cooked in a variety of styles, fried oysters, live music and craft beer!  Tickets are $55 for adults, $15 for 5-16 years old, and free for kids under 5.

    • March 19-March 20 at the Virginia Beach Convention Center:  Yuengling Shamrock Marathon Weekend features race distances for every member of the family, a sports and fitness expo, live music, Murphy’s Irish stew and of course, Yuengling beer.

    • March 26-March 27 from 10am-4pm at Hunt Club Farm:  Annual Easter Festival and Easter Egg Hunt!  Find some of over 30,000 easter eggs, play in the giant inflatables and go on a hayride!  Tickets are $15 for children; $8 for adults and pony rides are $5.  Photos with bunnies, chicks and ducks, face painting, carnival games and concessions are available at an additional cost.

    • March 28-April 3 at Town Center.  Town Center of Virginia Beach’s Restaurant Week!  Thirteen restaurants are participating and prices range from $10 - $40.

    • April 2 at from 12:30pm-430pm at Red Wing Park: annual Cherry Blossom Festival!  Celebrate spring, peace, and goodwill during the blossom season with the Sister Cities of Virginia Beach and Miyazaki, Japan.  Free and open to the public.

    • April 16 from 12pm-3pm at the Princess Anne Recreation Center: Touch-A-Truck!  Sit in Virginia Beach Fire Department’s monster truck, a police car, a street sweeper, a dump truck and more!  Enjoy face painting, kids crafts and activities and a DJ!  The first 100 kids (under age 12) will receive a free gift!

    • April 23 from 11am-4pm at Mount Trashmore:  Earth Day Celebration!  Enjoy live music, free children’s activities (food available for purchase) while learning about making our world a healthier place.

  • Norfolk

    • March 5-April 30 from 9am-9pmat the Norfolk Botanical Garden:  LanternAsia!  Art by Day, Magic by Night. Soon, walk through a mile of colossal Asian works of art transforming the Garden’s landscape.  This magnificent lantern exhibition will leave guests awestruck in Virginia for the first time – ever!

    • March 19 beginning at 10am in Oceanview:  The 49th Annual Saint Patrick’s Day Parade!  The parade begins off at 10am at Northside Middle School and travels 1.5 miles before ending at the intersection of First View and Government Avenue.

    • April 21-April 23 from 7:30pm-9:30pm each day at the Scope Arena: Virginia International Tattoo!  The 2016 Virginia International Tattoo will celebrate the past 20 years welcoming its largest cast of over 1500 performers! Military bands, drill teams, bagpipers, drummers, celtic dancers, choirs and more from around the globe will create this spectacular performance.

    • April 22-April 23 (times vary each day) at Town Point Park:  Norfolk NATO Festival!  The Norfolk NATO Festival  honors and promotes the international influence the NATO Command in Norfolk, VA and its 28 member nations, brings to our city.

  • Chesapeake

    • March 26 from 10am-1pm at Chesapeake City Park:  Chesapeake Eggstravaganza!  Bring a basket or bag for the egg hunt and join Peter Cottontail for a picture. The event is free and open to the public with concessions available for purchase.

    • April 9 at 9am at Dismal Swamp Canal Trail:  Dismal Swamp Stomp Running Festival!  Race distances for all ages through a flat asphalt course will take runners on a spectacular journey through lush, mysterious landscape and rich history.  Stick around for the post race party featuring live music, food, beer and awards!

  • Portsmouth

    • March 4-October 7 from 5pm-8pm in the Courtyard: First Friday Concert Series!  Enjoy free live music the first Friday of each month.

    • March 19 from 10am-4pm at Hoffler Creek Foundation: Leap Into Spring with a day of family fun! Do a scavenger hunt, go on a nature walk and get crafty with spring themed crafts!

    • April 2 from 7am-10am at Portsmouth Pavilion: Bunny Hop 5K and 1 Mile Family Fun Run!  After the races, join us at the Portsmouth Pavilion for awards, music and fun activities!  All registered participants will enjoy Chick-fil-A original chicken sandwiches from our friends at Chick-fil-A of Frederick Boulevard, locally brewed craft beer for the adults, and face painting and balloon animals for the kids!

    • April 16 from 10am-2pm at Portside: 8th Annual Cause for Paws!  Live music, activities for the young and old-2 or 4 legged will be provided.  All proceeds benefit the Portsmouth Humane Society.

  • Newport News

    • March 26 from 9am-1030am at Lee Hall Mansion:  Easter Egg Hunt!  In addition to the Easter egg hunt, the Easter Bunny will be on hand for games and photo opportunities. $5 per child.

    • March 11-13 at Newport News Park:  Newport News One City Marathon!  Runners will begin their journey in the downtown area, where the roots of Newport News Shipbuilding were established. Others have the option of running or walking the Nautical Mile – a fun run equivalent to 1.15 miles – through the streets of Newport News and finishing in front of onlookers at the Victory Arch. All runs will be followed by the “One City, One Celebration” in Victory Landing Park.

    • April 16 from 9am-5pm at The Virginia Living Museum: Earth Day Celebration! Observe animals enjoying special Earth Day treats, enjoy crafts and learn how to help the environment.

  • Hampton

    • March 26 from 10am-12pm at Peninsula Town Center: Easter Egg Hunt!  Participate in the easter egg hunt, face painting, balloon artist & visits with the Easter Bunny at our new Sensory Playground in Mary's Park.

    • March 26 from 10am-3pm at Sandy Bottom Nature Park:  Easter Eggstravaganza!  The Eggstravaganza includes the Easter Bunny, a children’s craft area, prizes, food vendors, and 10 egg hunts throughout the day!  $5 per child and $5 for pictures with the Easter Bunny!

    • April 16 from 10am-3pm at Barron Elementary School:  It’s a Spring Thing!  browse our local artisans and vendors.for a variety of items that you can't buy in stores. Have fun in the bounce house, buy treats from the food truck and purchase delicious baked goods!

    • April 16 from 10am-5pm at Mill Point Park:  International Children’s Festival!  Experience the beauty and wonder of exotic places as over thirty countries and cultures showcase their unique heritages.

  • Suffolk

    • March 19 at 11am at The Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts:  Superheroes!  An interactive play from The Children’s Theatre of Hampton Roads’ improvisational troupe, Bucket of Monkeys!  The play lasts about 45 minutes and admission is $5.  Kids under 3 receive free admission.

    • March 19 from 11am-2pm at Bennett’s Creek Park:  Eggstravaganza!  Bring your camera for Easter Bunny photos, join in a kids-only scavenger hunt and enjoy music, face painting, games and more!

    • March 19-March 26:  Suffolk Restaurant Week!  Suffolk Restaurant Week promises a savory blend of the city’s signature flavors with fixed menu prices ranging from $10 to $40!  Indulge in this culinary showcase!

    • April 9-April 10 at various times: Civil War Tour!  Experience guided Civil War walking tours led by historian Kermit Hobbs.  Tickets must be purchased in advance to reserve your space on the tour. Cost is $15 for members and $17 for non-members. Seats are very limited.

    • April 16 from 11am-5pm at Driver Village:  Touch A Truck!  Fire trucks, dump trucks, monster trucks...all kinds of trucks! Fun for the kids.  Free and open to the public!

    • April 23 from 1130am-430pm at the former Tidewater Community College Campus: Suffolk Wine Festival!  Experience wine tastings from 10 of Virginia’s finest wineries, as well as some tastings of wines from our Sister City wineries in Italy. There will be Virginia Craft Breweries offering up tastings of their finest as well.  Tickets required:  $35 online or $40 at the gate.

    • April 28 at 530pm at Lake Meade Park:  Yappy Hour!  Enjoy a relaxing night out while you socialize with other dog lovers of Suffolk!  Let your dog off the leash to play and make new friends while you enjoy a drink and make new friends of your own.  If you’re not already a member, bring your dog’s shot records and $10 to register your pup!

    • April 30 from 10am-1130am at theGreat Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge:  Great Dismal Swamp Guided Nature Walk, “Swamped and Loving It!”  Enjoy a biologist-led nature walk as you learn about the flora, fauna, wildlife and history that abound in the 111,000-acre wilderness. Reservations are required and cancellations are expected no less than 48 hours prior to scheduled tour. Call the Suffolk Visitor Center to reserve your spot.
